Grooming Supply For The Pre-Show Process
What horse show products should you never be without at a show? Well
hopefully you never have the misfortune of forgetting a vital piece of
equipment, clothing, or horse supply.
In reality, we all leave something at home at some point during the
show season. Below we will be discussing the important horse show
products you need to have at a show to complete the grooming process to
turn out a sharp and clean horse in the ring.
Bath Products
The first step in getting your horse ready for a
show is a bath, which you may or may not be able to complete at home.
If you are heading to a day show you most likely will bathe at home. If
you are heading for 2 or more days of showing you may have facilities
for bathing on site.
The horse show products you need for bathing are similar, no matter
where you end up beginning this long show grooming process.
Shampoos and conditioners are widely used when bathing. If you have
a horse with a darker hair coat you may have an easier time getting
your horse clean and have less of a need for special bathing shampoos
meant for stain removal.
Lighter coated horses may require special bathing horse show
products to remove grass, manure, and mud stains. You may also need to
apply a bit more elbow grease when scrubbing during a bath.
Shampoos and conditioners you can safely use on your horse can be found
both at your local grocery store or favorite tack shop.

Banding Products
The next logical step after bathing your horse
typically includes banding or braiding mane. For this you need to make
sure you have banding supplies on you list of horse show products.
If you are banding your horse's mane you should make sure you have
your basic bands that match well to your horse, some clips, and any
other trimming supplies. If you have to trim mane every so often you
may need some good trimming scissors.
If you are braiding your horse's mane you have a few other supplies
you need to get the job done. There are a couple different methods you
can use when braiding which may change the horse show products you
need.
Clipping Products
Clipping your horse usually requires horse
show products such as clippers, clipper blades, trimming scissors, and
razors. It might be easiest to clip your horse the night before a show
or right after you bathe.
You may need different types of clippers depending on the area you
are planning to work on. Ears, muzzle, and face clipping require a
blade that cuts a little closer.
When working over your horse’s nose and muzzle you could use your
clippers or a disposable razor for a closer cut. Just make sure to use
caution and common sense when approaching your horse with either.
If you are making the time investment to body clip you will need a
heavy duty set of clippers. One that is made to take on larger tasks.
Using your grooming clippers to body clip can ruin them.
Show Prep Products
The morning of a horse show is usually the
most hectic part of the day. You need to get yourself and your horse
show ring ready. If you planned ahead your horse has already had a bath
and mane banded.
Now it time for the finishing touches to your horse. Each person
will have their own system or process they use for getting ready at the
horse show products needed at this stage vary quite a bit.
Some products that may be generally helpful to most exhibitors
include fly spray (best used right before the class), coat conditioner
or gloss to enhance shine, highlighter (muzzle, face, and ears), and
supplies to secure your tail extension.
Hoof polish is another commonly used product you may want in your
travel kit.
