My Gelding
I have the best luck making a plan in advance. I have certain expenses due thoughout the year that I know I can plan on. Such expenses include shots, coggins, insurance, and the routine vet and board payments.
January is usually a rough time of year for us as my husbands job slows down. This summer I am saving money for those expenses due in the beginning of the year (insurance, vet, boards). I have also begun to save a few dollars here and there for the unexpected costs, so if one of the horses decides to attempt a unique twirl in the air while playing in the pasture and ends up getting hurt I have someplace for that money to come from.
I think this year I might try drafting up an annual/monthly budget to get better at saving for certain expenses.
Horses are so unpredictable and in the last two years I have had one we had to put down due to injury and another that colicked pretty bad just before thanksgiving.
If anyone else has any other savings tips or ideas to reduce expenses, I would find that very helpful.
