Used Horse Tack

Your Guide Before Shopping

In your search for the right equipment for riding and showing, used horse tack can work just as well as new tack.

Not only can you save in overall cost, you also don't have to work to break in new leather.

Before shopping, you should first to decide what you need, where you plan to look, and what you need to look for in a piece of used horse tack.

Figure Out What You Need First

Before heading out on your tack shopping spree, it may be a good idea to figure out what pieces of equipment you need or want by making a list with higher priority items at the top.used-horse-tack1

You don't necessarily have to purchase everything on that list right away, but it can be kept for future reference. You can always consult your list at a later time when you may unexpectedly find yourself at a tack sale or tack shop.

Sorting what items you need or want can also help you plan for future purchases and avoid impulse buying. If you have a goal of saving for a show saddle, you might think twice about your horse spending habits in order to reach that goal.

With a list now in hand, you know what you need to be shopping for. Next you need to figure out where you plan to shop for used horse tack.

Plan Your Shopping Route

Used horse tack can be found in many places if you know where to look. Generally, you may already have a game plan in mind when heading out the door to start shopping. Keep in mind other alternatives to finding the tack.

From the internet to the local tack shop, you have many options available. Taking some time to research prices can also prove to be beneficial. For example, if you were looking for a used show saddle you may want to check a few online resources to determine average pricing. Keep in mind the brands of saddle you are looking at and compare prices between each brand.

Your first thought for shopping may include your local tack store. Many tack shops have tack items for sale on consignment. You can find some great deals in the used horse tack section. Most people are unaware of these deals and you may be able to get more for your money.

A tack sale or auction may also be a good source of used tack. At a tack sale you may be able to barter with the seller for a better price. You can find both new and used horse tack at most sales. At an auction you have a chance to get an even better deal based on the bidding and possibly get some newer pieces for a great price. However, it does depend on the auction and where the equipment is coming from.

There are also some internet-based venues you can check out. EBay is a huge marketplace to find some great used horse tack. Just remember when searching the web for deals it is "buyer beware". One of the biggest risks you take when bidding for horse tack online is that it may not fit your horse.

Before you hand over your payment information, check if there is a return policy especially if you are purchasing a larger item such as a saddle. If there is not a return policy, use you best judgment and plan your options if the item doesn't work for you.

You may also find some success with horse classified ads. You can search both online or in a newspaper to find items.

Tips To Evaluate Used Tack

When shopping for used horse tack, it is very important to take into account the condition it is in. Obviously it is easier to make this determination if you have the opportunity to handle and inspect the piece of tack before buying. If you are shopping online, make sure you are able to view as many photos as possible.

Photos aren't the best way to judge the actual condition of the tack, but compare the item to the description the best you can. Many sellers provide plenty of photos and are open about the condition of the piece they are selling. If you ask for more information any reputable seller would be happy to answer any and all questions.

Make sure you look for any major wear problems when shopping. For example, if you are looking at saddles check out the condition of the tree and all the major pieces and parts. Make sure it will meet your needs and is, at the very least, safe for you to use. The last thing you want is for a vital piece or part to break while you are riding.

Test Drive Your Newly Used Tack

Many sellers, both online and off, do allow you to trial larger pieces of tack or equipment. Make sure you adhere to any requirements when fitting your horse. If you’re fitting a winter blanket you may have to place a sheet between your horse and the blanket in order to return it. There may also be a time limit for fitting.

If you do have to make a return, make sure you adhere to the packaging requirements. You may also be faced with return fees such as the return shipping costs and restocking.

We have had the experience of trial testing a saddle from a local tack shop. If you go this route you may be expected to leave a credit card number before leaving with the saddle. It was very easy to do and low hassle. In the end the saddle ended up working very well and we purchased it.
